Do-It-Yourself

Running your own social server is genuinely rewarding — and genuinely complicated. You’ll need a Linux machine (or a VPS), a domain name, working knowledge of DNS, and patience for the initial setup. Once it’s running, you’re also the one keeping it updated, backing it up, and deciding what to do when something breaks at 2am.

Friendica, the software UDP Social is built on, is one of the more capable self-hosting options in the fediverse. It supports a wide range of protocols, has an active development community, and doesn’t require you to run a massive server to have a functional node. But “capable” and “easy” aren’t the same thing — the documentation assumes some familiarity with web hosting, and first-time setup has real rough edges.

If you’re comfortable on a command line and want full control over your data and your community, this section is for you. We’ll cover what to expect, where the sharp corners are, and how to connect your self-hosted node to UDP Social’s network when you’re ready.
