The internet wasn’t always walled gardens. Before Facebook and Instagram consolidated everything
under one roof, the web was a collection of independent servers that talked to each other using
shared protocols — email being the most durable example. The Fediverse is an attempt to bring that
model to social media: thousands of independently-run servers, each with their own community and
rules, connected to each other through open standards.
It’s a brilliant idea with a real barrier to entry. To participate, you either need to be a
motivated systems administrator willing to run and moderate your own server, or you need to find one
willing to let you in. Most people are neither, which is why the Fediverse remains a niche corner
of the internet despite its promise.
UDP Social exists to close that gap. Our automation handles everything a systems administrator would
— provisioning, maintenance, moderation tools — and gives you your own private node without any of
the technical overhead. And because we’re built on Friendica, one of the most capable platforms in
the Fediverse ecosystem, you’re not locked in: by default your network stays private, but when
you’re ready to connect with the broader Fediverse, that door is open on your terms.
